Abstract

The issues surrounding sexual harassment (SH) in organizations have become increasingly complex and varied. Unfortunately the research in this area, although substantial, does not appear to have fully adjusted to the changing nature of the social phenomenon of SH. As a result, many emergent areas of SH remain "under-researched." For example, the influence of workplace romance on SH, although significant in its impact, has received limited examination or conceptual development in the literature. Therefore, the objective of this symposium is to move beyond those issues traditionally examined in the extant SH literature and to introduce research that represents a substantive departure from those themes that are characteristic of typical SH symposia. Accordingly, our symposium includes four presentations addressing the following topics: (a) the theoretical and legal issues surrounding same-sex SH, (b) the link between dissolved workplace romances and SH in organizations, and (c) the moderating effects of ethnic harassment and bystander stress on hostile environment SH and its associated negative outcomes. Although each presentation offers a unique perspective on SH, they also share a common thread in that they all explore the issue of organizational climate as a factor that can influence SH.
