Abstract

The symposium was organized to give the friends and colleagues of the late James C. Worthy an opportunity to gather, remember his career and contributions, and celebrate his life. Knowing Jim made all our lives richer. Jim seldom missed an Academy of Management meeting, but this year we will miss him. Our meeting in Chicago, Jim's home for so many years, is a most appropriate place for the Academy of Management to celebrate the life of Jim Worthy, to review his contributions to management thought, and to discuss the impact his work has had on management practices today. The symposium will have a number of different elements: 1) A panel of Jim's colleagues will discuss his contributions to management theory and organization theory. 2) A video tribute, combining photographs and video footage, created for the symposium, will be shown. 3) Jim's last work, "Management and the Origin of Civilizations," will be presented. It is the culmination of years of interest, research, and synthesis and discusses the importance of management to the development of civilization. The paper draws from a diverse field of disciplines. 4) Reminiscences about Jim and his work from friends and colleagues who could not travel to the meeting will be read, including thoughts from Alfred Chandler, Peter F. Drucker, and William Foote Whyte. 5) The opportunity for friends, family, and colleagues to discuss Jim, his contributions, his life, and to share stories about the eminent scholar we all now miss.
