Abstract

The oft-used phrase, “the only constant in today’s environment is change,” provides an apt springboard for this symposium. Changes in the demographic make-up of the workforce, structures of organizations, and growing competition in the global marketplace have provided impetus for increased attention by both scholars and practitioners on the role of mentoring in the workplace. In today’s pluralistic environment, “new” products, services and processes become obsolete in the blink of an eye. Mentoring may provide one of the best means of developing individuals in these rapidly changing environments. In this symposium, we focus on mentoring in a pluralistic environment, highlight issues and challenges addressed by mentoring, and in so doing, break new ground in terms of suggesting research directions. The papers in this symposium build on and expand mentoring theory and applications by analyzing the role of mentoring in multiple contexts (academe, education, industry) and with multiple populations (students, professors, employees). We discuss traditional (e.g., formal corporate programs), leading edge (e.g., on-line mentoring in the classroom) and combination approaches to mentoring.
