Abstract

As we enter the new millenium, a dramatic evolutionary shift in management education is taking place. Management education's dominant pedagogy is shifting away from a format where student learning is confined to classroom experiences toward one where real-world experential education, based outside of the classroom and in the community, is paramount. This evolutionary pedagogical shift is the topic of our symposium. The symposium has three related parts: (1) we identify the increasingly pluralistic environment as the catalyst for this educational shift, (2) we explain this shift as an evolutionary response to environmental change, and (3) we describe two pedagogical tools, action-learning and service-learning, that "fit" the demands of our new environment. This symposium is designed to be interactive - involving the panelists, the discussant, and the attendees. Please note: project descriptions, relevant syllabi, and action- and service-learning resource lists will be available to all symposium attendees.
