Abstract

This workshop will focus on case method teaching and will take place on Sunday August 8th from 8 AM to 12 Noon. It is designed for both novices and those who have experience using the method but seek to improve their skills. The session will be organized around three segments. First, we will begin with a 30 minute overview of case method teaching that lays out some of the issues one typically confronts in the case classroom. After this, participants will have the opportunity to attend two 1-hour break-out sessions focusing on various issues associated with case method teaching.

For the first break-out session, participants can choose between "Case Process Issues 1" and "Course Design Issues." Case Process Issues 1 will include such topics as: developing a teaching plan, selecting students to open the case, and techniques for opening a case discussion. Course Design Issues will include topics such as: how to obtain good teaching cases, deciding how many cases to include, striking the appropriate balance between cases and lectures, and whether to require case write-ups, and whether to use cases for exams.

For the second break-out session, participants can choose between "Case Process Issues 2" and "New Technologies and Case Teaching." Case Process Issues 2 will focus on such topics as: facilitating good case discussions, dealing with tough classroom issues that may arise, using the blackboard effectively, and establishing closure to the case discussion. New Technologies and Case Teaching will focus on such innovations as CD-ROM that offer multimedia cases and the use of electronic media to enhance case discussions (e.g., electronic voting in advance of the classroom discussion).

The workshop sessions will be led by Robert DeFillippi (Suffolk University), Mark Keil (Georgia State University), Ramiro Montealegre (University of Colorado at Boulder), Jeff Smith (Wake Forest University), and Donna Stoddard (Babson College). Advanced registration required. Contact Mark Keil to register.
