Abstract

The emergence of businesses as leaders in the search for sustainable development solutions is one of the most hopeful changes in the global organizational landscape as we journey into a pluralistic world.
This PDW hosts an extended dialogue between Academy of Management members and the "chief sustainability officers" of five large global corporations -- McDonalds, Monsanto, BP-Amoco, Deere & Co., and IGA -- to explore the companies' best practices, future aspirations, and possibilities for collaboration with academia in support of global sustainable development.
The session will be designed along the lines of an appreciative inquiry in order to facilitate maximum involvement by all participants and to keep the focus of the workshop on discovering and co-creating new positive possibilities for theory and practice. Dialogue between presenters and those attending the session is a key component of the session, and will include the formation of "open space groups" involving corporate "sustainability officers" and session participants.
Topics to be explored include best corporate practices in promoting sustainable development; the most significant challenges corporations face as they attempt to provide social and environmental leadership; the most promising trends, opportunities, and directions seen on the horizon for moving companies in the direction of being leaders for a positive global future; and how businesses and academia can partner to advance the sustainability conversation in the broader society.
Pre-registration is requested in order to better prepare for the session dynamics. For more information, or to pre-register, contact Jim Ludema by e-mail or at 630-829-6229.
