Abstract

Our symposium is designed to address issues related to effectively teaching negotiation courses in the 21st century. The principal question guiding our discussion is how to meet the needs of our increasingly diverse student populations while simultaneously exposing students to the complexities of negotiating in pluralistic environments. We present four pedagogical initiatives, each incorporated into a course on negotiations, designed to address this topic: (1) interactive drama, (2) service-learning, (3) videotape examinations, and (4) WebCT technology. Each initiative is applied as a tool for increasing students' understanding of, respect for, and skills related to negotiating in diverse, pluralistic environments. We believe these initiatives have the potential to assist negotiation instructors as we adapt to the pedagogical challenges of the new millenium. Project descriptions and syllabi will be distributed to session participants.
