Abstract

The Chicago Region Biodiversity Council is a collaborative effort of over sixty land management, scientific, educational and environmental non-profit organizations and government agencies with a mission "to protect the natural communities of the Chicago region and restore them to long-term viability." These organizations own and manage over 200,000 acres of natural areas, collectively referred to as "Chicago Wilderness". These areas represent a variety of ecosystems, including lake, river, dune, marsh, bog, forest, prairie and oak savanna.
This session will visit one of these natural areas and meet with representatives from some of the participating organizations to discuss the history of the collaborative effort, the organizational and management issues which they have encountered, and their strategies and plans for the future.
Participants may attend both this session and the Saturday morning session "Restoring Chicago Wilderness: A Service-Learning Activity", or just the afternoon session.
Transportation to and from the Hyatt will be provided. A small fee will be required. Pre-registration is required in order to make transportation arrangements. To pre-register, or for more information, contact Gordon Rands by e-mail or call 309-298-1342.
