Abstract

Chicago lies in the midst of a variety of ecosystems, including lake, river, dune, marsh, bog, forest, prairie and oak savanna. The prairie, bog and savanna ecosystems are among the most endangered in North America.
This session will visit and perform natural habitat restoration activities at one of the natural areas in the 200,000 acre "Chicago Wilderness" system, and will discuss service learning and the natural environment.
Participants may attend both this session and the Saturday afternoon "Organizational Collaboration for Chicago Wilderness: A Site Visit & Panel Discussion" session, or just the morning service learning activity. Participants may also wish to attend a Sunday morning session on service-learning sponsored by PNS.
Transportation to and from the Hyatt, as well as lunch will be provided. A small fee will be required. Participants may wish to bring a hat, gloves, handkerchief, and change or shirt and pants.
The service activity will likely consist of cutting and clearing brush, pulling non-native vegetation, and/or collecting native plant seeds for future planting.
Pre-registration is required in order to make lunch and transportation arrangements. To pre-register, or for more information, contact Gordon Rands by e-mail or call 309-298-1342.
