Abstract

This symposium session will introduce a new problem framing and solving technique, called Comprehensive Situation Mapping (CSM), to attendees interested in Managerial & Organizartional Cognition, Operations Management, and Managerial Education & Development. We will take an issue of interest to the attendees -- for example the presumed linkage between research efforts, stress on student retention, and teaching quality in a business school -- and we will frame it and analyse it using the CSM approach to problem framing and causal mapping. The first presenter, Ken Aupperle, will work with the session attendees to frame the situation in terms of its key factors. The second presenter, Nancy Duncan, will work with the participants to devise an influence diagram of the situation. The third panelist, Will Acar, will work with the audience to enrich the influence diagram by transforming it into a causal map of the CSM type. The moderator, Paul DuMont will coordinate the activities and outline the general applicability of the approach.
