Abstract

This symposium considers how cynicism and trust coexist and interact in workplace relationships. Three papers will be presented, followed by discussant and audience participation. The first paper demonstrates empirically the distinct natures of these two constructs and that they can coexist in dyadic relationships. The second paper presents a conceptual framework for understanding how cynicism can impact on the trust building and trust destruction processes. The final paper explores the development and diffusion of cynicism and trust using a social network analysis and reports on the effects of these two constructs on in-role and extra-role performance.
