Abstract

There is little agreement about how to classify varying types of non-prescribed work behavior, such as organizational citizenship, prosocial behavior, contextual performance, deviant workplace behavior, and extra-role behavior. However, all of these behavior categories are similar in that these behaviors are dictated by the discretion of the employee. The purpose of this symposium is to present research that will address this categorization issue by determining if and how different types of discretionary behavior are related. One such way to classify discretionary behaviors is by whether they are designed to enhance (i.e., positive discretionary behaviors) or inhibit (i.e., negative discretionary behaviors) organizational processes. This symposium includes five papers: a theoretical framework based on four types of social relationships which develop in the workplace, a Multi-Dimensional Scaling paper which empirically derives a typology for various types of positive and negative discretionary behavior, and three empirical studies examining conditions and factors which impact an employee's choice to perform positive and negative discretionary behaviors. The symposium will conclude with an audience-driven discussion concerning the efficacy and appropriateness of developing a categorization scheme that combines the various discretionary behaviors listed above into one broad construct.
