Abstract

This symposium is designed to present the state-of-the-art of the interface of leadership and multiple levels of analysis issues. The most current theoretical work and empirical results about three well-known approaches to leadership are discussed. The common theme of these leadership approaches is their multiple-level nature in terms of both theory building and theory testing. The three multiple-level leadership approaches represent different schools of leadership thought -- leader-member exchange, charismatic leadership, and the romance of leadership. Throughout the symposium presentations, multiple-level leadership issues are addressed from theoretical, measurement, and analytical perspectives. Both quantitative and qualitative data and analyses are presented. Leading researchers and proponents of each leadership approach are included in the symposium; and the discussant, an expert in leadership and levels of analysis issues, will integrate the other presentations and facilitate an audience discussion of these cutting-edge ideas.
