Abstract

Almost any important management research question involves study of embedded phenomena. Explanation of such phenomena inevitably involves examination of multiple simultaneous and asynchronous sources of influence, multi-directional causalities within co-evolutionary event sequences. The NOFIA project (involving ten international teams), led by Professor Arie Y. Lewin, represents in scale, effort, diversity of methodology, and international scope one of largest management research programs worldwide. It uses comparative longitudinal and critical case studies linking evolution of new forms of organizing to performance. It investigates critical process questions about pace, sequencing of strategic change and new forms of organizing and it aims to inform practitioner debates on managing transition from more traditional to new forms of organizing in a pluralistic world. NOFIA employs same longitudinal core data collection methods, coding and analyses schemes. Consortium teams also collaborate on special themes -- technology enabled new organization forms, CEO succession, and worldwide transformation of financial services industry. Of particular interest is exploration of contingent country effects. This symposium presents Co-evolution of Cooperation: Historical Analysis of Interfirm Networks, 1870-1996 -- Marie Laure Djelic (ESSEC) et al. Co-evolution of IT-enabled Organizationals in Japanese Retailing Industry (1980-1997) -- Tomoaki Sakano (Waseda University). IT-enabled Organizations and Performance: General Merchandizing Industry -- Starling Hunter (MIT). From Hierarchy to Market: New Forms of Organizing in the German Automotive and Chemical Industry -- Ludwig Theuvsen et al (Cologne University). Comparative Analysis of Korean and German Argumentation Rationality -- Axel von Werder (Technical University, Berlin).
