Abstract

In keeping with the conference theme of pluralism, this symposium explores sexual harassment from multiple perspectives; the organization, the victim, the perpetrator, and the legal system. First, Caren Goldberg and Patrick McHugh will examine the organization's perspective. They will present the results of a two-wave study that examines the impact of sexual harassment training on organizations. The study looks at the influence of training on trainees' perceptions of potentially harassing situations and their likely reactions if these situations were to happen to them. Second, Robert Done, Maureen O'Connor, and Barbara Gutek will explore the victim's perspective. They will discuss the findings of their research examining the relationship between raters' definitions of sexual harassment and five personality characteristics; likelihood to sexually harass, social desirability, racism, and two sexism measures. Next, Robert Done will examine the perpetrator's perspective. He will discuss the findings of two studies designed to test the hypothesis that sexually opportunistic behavior is a manifestation of low self-control. Finally, Deborah Knapp will investigate the legal perspective. She will present the findings of her research examining the predictors of summary judgements in sexual harassment cases. After each of the presenters describes their research project focused on one of the four perspectives, Jeanette Cleveland will lead a discussion.
