Abstract

In the past few years, there has been intense interest by both practitioners and researchers in the use of assessment and feedback for individual growth and development. This interest has resulted in the use of feedback data for a variety of approaches. Some of these include the use of multirater assessments (also known as 360-degree feedback) to provide information to managers and employees regarding their performance and ways to improve; executive coaching with feedback for the purpose of providing one-on-one individualized development processes for higher level managers; and various types of psychological testing programs such as assessment centers for the purpose of employee development and placement. Although methodologically different, all these approaches share a common assumption regarding the importance of feedback for increasing self-awareness and promoting individual behavior change. As a whole, they represent the beginning of the next phase of employee and management assessment. The goal of this symposium is to offer research and theory regarding several of these approaches to collecting, delivering and utilizing employee feedback processes in organizations.
