Abstract

There persists a disturbing tendency, both in the management literature and in management practice, to use "leader" as a synonym for top manager. This clearly implies that those not in executive positions are not leaders. Moreover, it suggests that we actually have no agreed upon definition of leadership independent of position in the hierarchy. Over the past ten years, projects within the corporate members of the Society for Organizational Learning (SoL) have led to a simple yet unusual view of leadership as the capacity of a human community to sustain significant change. In these projects, three critical and interdependent leadership roles have been demonstrated repeatedly: local line managers, executives, and internal networkers or community builders. This session will explore leadership as a distributed phenomenon through the development journeys of three individuals representing these three types of leadership. Each will reflect on their growth and challenges, both organizationally and personally.
